Difference between Jizya and Zakat

Posted by The Mindset on May 19, 2013

Every time the Muslims are asked why the non-Muslims were forced to pay Jizya or why they were indirectly insulted the Muslims reply by saying “so what, the Muslims had to pay zakat too”..implying jizya and zakat are similar taxes imposed on non-Muslims and Muslims respectively.
Let’s see the Differences between Jizya and Zakat

Zakat Jizya
1. obligatory upon Muslims obligatory upon Dhimmis
2. Muslim’s net worth of assets must exceed the Nisab (excess money for personal need) to be obliged to give Zakat not required for the Dhimmi’s wealth or property to reach Nisab in order to pay Jizya
3. only payable on assets continuously owned over one lunar year that are in excess of the Nisab paid according to a contract, but usually paid yearly regardless to Nisab
4. the amount of Zakat paid is fixed and already specified by Sharee’ah the amount paid is not fixed; at least one gold Dinar; with no maximum amount; and it’s not been explicitly specified by Sharee’ah
5. paid only by the owner of the assets himself/herself paid by all able-bodied adult males of military age and affording power
6. refusal to pay Zakat has no a specific punishment by Sharee’ah law in life, but it’s delayed to the end time. refusal to pay Jizya is considered a breach of The Dhimma contract; as a consequence the Dhimmi’s blood(life) and assets would become permissible
7. should be paid seeking God’s pleasure [Qur’an 30:39] paid with humiliation, servility and belittlement

Let’s analyze the points one by one.

1. The first point says that jizya was taken from dhimmis or the people of the book which means – Jews and Christians since Allah the all knowing did not know about Hindus ,Jains, Biddhists or american aboriginal religions. (So much for all knowing). These kind of kaffirs were not given the
choiceof jizya. For them the choices were – Conversion or Death.
Islam in it’s true form is nothing less than a large scale organised crime syndicate.

2. Muslims net wealth must exceed a minimum amount which is called Nisab. While all non-Muslims have to pay jizya the poor Muslims will be exempted from zakat because  their net wealth will not exceed the Nisab.
Jizya is an indirect way of “Forced Conversion” since many poor non-Muslims will not be able to pay jizya.

3. The third point again reflects that a minimum wealth must be maintained by the Muslim to pay zakat. No such condition exists for the kaffirs.

4. There is no MAXIMUM amount of zakat, which means even the entire wealth of a non-Muslims can be taken as jizya. This is not the case with zakat. The max. amount is fixed and that too is not bounding on the Muslim.

5. Jizya is paid by all non-Muslims irrespective of age, wealth.

6. This point makes clear that zakat is optional for Muslim. On the contrary if a non-Muslims refuse to pay jizya his entire property and women folk can be taken captive by Muslim. The punishment for refusing to pay jizya is death – The Religion of Peace🙂

7. The last point confirms that the entire idea of jizya is to humiliate, insult and belittle the non-Muslims.

Here are some more proofs that Islam uses the jizya as a weapon against the non-Muslims for the ultimate aim of conversion to Islam.

Muhammad very clearly established that people of other religions have to pay a poll tax to Muslims called the jizya as a reminder of their inferior status. This abrogates an earlier verse stating that there is “no compulsion in religion” and destroys any pretense that Islam is merely a religion and not a political system.

Qur’an (9:29) – “Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.”

Muslim (19:4294) – There are many places in the hadith where Muhammad tells his followers to demand the jizya of non-believers. Here he lays down the rule that it is to be extorted by force: “If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah’s help and fight them”

Bukhari (53:386) – Our Prophet, the Messenger of our Lord, has ordered us to fight you till you worship Allah Alone or give Jizya (i.e. tribute); and our Prophet has informed us that our Lord says:– “Whoever amongst us is killed (i.e. martyred), shall go to Paradise to lead such a luxurious life as he has never seen, and whoever amongst us remain alive, shall become your master.” This is being recounted during the reign of Umar, Muhammad’s companion and the second caliph who sent conquering armies into non-Muslim Persian and Christian lands (after Muhammad’s death).

Ishaq 956 & 962 – “He who withholds the Jizya is an enemy of Allah and His apostle.” The words of Muhammad.

Popular Sufi teacher, Shaykh Ahmad Sirhindi:

“The honor of Islam lies in insulting the unbelief and the unbelievers (kafirs). One who respects kafirs dishonors Muslims… The real purpose of levying the Jizya on them is to humiliate them… [and] they remain terrified and trembling.” It is intended to hold them under contempt and to uphold the honour and might of Islam.”

First of all, a country that imposes the sharia law has got to be an Islamic country. If you chose to live in an Islamic country and refuse to follow our religion then you have to follow by our rules. We are not forcing you to come and stay at our country, you chose to. So by choosing to live in an Islamic country you have to follow our rules, in this case; by paying jizya. An agreement is an agreement, if you choose not to follow the agreement then you have to face the consequences. The reason why we let only jews and christians stay is because they have the same roots and they all believe in one true god. That is why we tolerate to have you guys in the country. Islam is not only a religion, it is a way of life. Real Islam is the ways of the sunnis not shias or sufis. Shias and sufis are one that went astray from the true religion. So what the sufi teacher said is false. This all i can say for now for my knowledge is still small, thank you for your time🙂

The jizya kind of reminds me of what the italian mafia used to do. They talk about protection:
“Hey, you give me 50% of your income and I offer you ‘protection'”. You chose not to? Fine, we break your knees. The muslims in an islamic state wold do the same to you, except it’s your neck they would break.

And they’re actually doing it, even today, ISIS and all.

    For those who don’t know,

the Jizya is a tax imposed on the dhimmis living under the protection of the Islamic state. However, it is not imposed on all. It is only imposed on the men who have attained puberty. So therefore it is not imposed on the women and children. The tax is also imposed fairly and is not meant to be overburdening.

The Jizya tax guarantees the dhimmis complete protection under the Islamic state. If an enemy country attacks the Islamic country, the Islamic country has a duty to defend the non muslims and the non muslims are not even obliged to fight!

Muslims also have to pay a yearly tax called Zakat. Zakat is even binding on property, and jewellery. Zakat should also be paid in the form of food as well. The Jizya is not binding on the property.

The Jizya is a tax levied on non-Muslims in lieu of military service which is compulsory for Muslims but not for non-Muslims. The amount of Jizya is much less than the Zakat, which is levied on Muslims only. The non-Muslims paying Jizya were exempt from compulsory military service in a Muslim State but were entitled to full protection.

Zakah is one of the 5 pillars of Islam and it is compulsory on everyone. It is compulsory even on the non-Muslim, this is called Jizya. Jizya does not degrade the non-Muslim people, it actually brings equality. Since the Muslims are obliged to pay Zakah, then why cant non-Muslims pay Jizya? That brings equality between the two.

    • The Jizya tax guarantees the dhimmis complete protection under the Islamic state.

First – The word dhimmi is like second-class citizen
Second- your own statement proves that jizya is a kind of “extortion money” not “tax” as you are claiming.

I have negated all other things you have written.

    1. Muslim Women and children (whose money reached nisab) pay zakat. Non-muslim women and children don’t pay jizya. Also

    2. Paying jizya for non-Musulim able-bodied men disengages them from the army (and defending the country.) Paying zakat for Muslim men doesn’t give them such a right.

    3. Jizya was usually way lower than zakat.

    4. Please stop trying to prove a point by citing ISIS actions as such. It is like saying that atheists/christians are bloodlusty and pointing at Staling/Hitler actions…

    • 1. non-Muslims man have to pay jizya on behalf of their children and women; stop making a fool of yourself.
      2. non-Muslims are considered second-class citizens in Islamic states, which means they can’t join army even if they want to.
      3. Jizya was higher and insulting; read the last para of the post.
      4. Hitler/Stalin didn’t used religion as an excuse for their actions. ISIS does and it call itself “Islamic State”

Read the post before making stupid comments.

We all know Muslims lie, or at least bend the truth, to protect Islam and their crooked ‘prophet’. It’s really quite funny, and almost insulting that they think we’ll just listen to them, instead of the facts and truth from history and their own scriptures.🙂

    Dear The Mindset

Zakat is charitable giving to the poor, a 2.5% tithe on a Muslim’s yearly income which is intended for the less fortunate in society. A wealthier Muslim can also create a waqf (pious endowment); this could be something like building a mosque, or establish a business to which all of the profits will go towards a local mosque, or food for the poor, etc. Zakat is also one of the five pillars of Islam, making it a hugely important part of the religion and one that is not really up for debate, unless you are below an certain income threshold, in which case you dont pay at all.
Jizya on the other hand has a more complicated history and opinions on it have varied throughout history. The verse in the Quran which mentions it (Quran 9:29) does not actually specify what jizya is, it only mentions that it is something that people of the book (Christians and Jews) living in Muslim lands must do.
“Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled.”
We thus must look at the Hadith as well to get an actual definition of what jizya is. We have Hadith regarding Muhammad and the early Rashidun Caliphs collecting jizya payments from people of the book living in Muslim lands, and there is a history of Islamic legal commentary deciding what is and is not acceptable jizya practice based upon the four legal schools.
We also have to look at what jizya’s historical use was. If jizya was merely a form of zakat, then it would, like zakat, be designated as for the poor. However, jizya was always, even in Muhammad and the Rashidun Caliphate’s times, given to the “state”, such as it existed at the time. As the Islamic empire expanded, different jizya “deals” were constantly being made with different groups as they were conquered; as such there was never any uniform jizya payment for Dhimmi (Non-Muslim) populations across the Islamic world (however, it is important to not that, unlike zakat, jizya must always be paid, poverty still requires a Dhmmi to pay jizya). Some Islamic empires would rely heavily on jizya payments, and some (such as the Ummayads) would even discourage conversion to keep populations paying an increasingly crucial tax. The Ottomans would apply jizya differently in different regions, and the Eastern European Christian slave boys that were taken to become the elite Janissaries were a form of jizya, organized through the devshirme system.
So to sum up, I would have to say that the fundamental difference between jizya and zakat is its intention: zakat is a more personal to the the Muslim faithful to be given to the poor; jizya is a tax, not even necessarily monetary, levied upon non-Muslim populations to be given to the state to further the aims of the state. Zakat is an expression of religious piety, whereas jizya is more of an expression of submission to the state. While few Muslims would argue for jizya today, save for more fundamentalist/political Islam/certain salafist types, it is very important that we keep in mind that it’s a quite progressive system compared to how other conquered religious groups have been dealt with in similar societies. While its obviously a bit irritating for me, poor Christian peasant living in a Muslim empire, to pay my jizya tax to the Abassids, Fatimids, Safavids, Ottomans, whoever, Id be much happier to pay jizya than, say, a violent forced conversion or extermination as in much of Europe at the time!

Jizya was less than Zakat. If anything it promoted conversion from Islam for material minded people.
